We as SWOS staff wanted to clarify our previous statement regarding the closure of the school on Thursday, November 10. Our students have been impacted by a number of high profile events that have taken place in our community recently including several student suicides, in addition to heightened feelings of tension and disagreements. This week we have experienced students grappling with both of these and have seen a sharp change in student behavior and related safety issues.
To allow SWOS staff to plan for effective supports for students (including suicide prevention and follow-up support) we have made the decision that SWOS will be closed for the entire day on Thursday, November 10, 2016. This decision was made in the best interest of the safety and welfare of SWOS students and staff.
Today, as a staff, we have been in meetings and training to identify how to ensure that we can keep all of our students safely engaged in school and support them in dealing with issues of depression and suicide, in addition to revisiting with them how to engage in healthy dialogue and conflict resolution in accordance with our SWOSology character education component.
Because of our schedule (classes are in session Monday through Thursday, with no classes on Friday during the regular semester), classes will resume Monday, November 14, 2016.
If you have any questions or concerns, please contact SWOS Director Dr. Charlotte Wolf.
